If you like to make lists like I do, then in this day and age of having technology wherever you go means that using a List App makes sense. By investing some time (and sometimes money) into learning how to use an app, you’ll save time because you’ll be able to re-use lists, you’ll always have your lists with you – meaning that you won’t have to either carry around a paper list OR carry your list in your head (that never works with me!).
In previous posts, I’ve mentioned different lists – grocery shopping list, packing lists, and, of course, to do lists. There are separate software/apps for these specific activities, or you can use a general list software/app that will cover them all. The one app appeals to me because the simpler I can keep it, the more likely I am to use it. If I have to learn and use multiple applications, I’d probably end up not using them. However, I will include a couple of examples of lists apps for specific activities.
I’ve mentioned the Cozi Family Organization app in my post about the Family Calendar. In that post, I sung the praise of the online calendar functionality, but Cozi also has a To-do list feature and a grocery list feature – all shareable so that both mom and dad can have access or you can assign to-dos to other users. You can also add the to-dos to the calendar. And, of course it’s all available on the mobile app as well. Cozi has a free and pay version.
The next app that comes to the top of the list (no pun intended) is Google Keep. With both a web and mobile app, you can keep all your lists and notes in sync all the time. This app rates high because it’s very simple to learn and use. You can also add notes or items via voice, and you can also add photos of items. Pro: FREE; Con: not available in IOS version.
In my post about packing, I mentioned that there are apps that will help you create, maintain, and reuse packing lists. Packing List is one of those apps. It has a lot of features that a simple “to do” list application does not. It comes with a master list that contains many of the items that you need to pack. Use the existing items to build your own custom lists. You can also add items that aren’t already in the template (like the garlic press I bring with me on our summer vacation – most rentals don’t have one!). If you are a list maker, and you travel a lot, having “Packing List” as a separate app is a good idea. FREE – there is a pay version if you don’t want ads.
If you read a lot of books like I do, then GoodReads is another list app that you should have. Available on both web and mobile, you can add books to your “To Read” list on the fly – you know when you are having that glass of wine with your friends, and they start talking about great books that you just have to read. The next day you can’t remember one title or author. With GoodReads, just whip out your phone and add the book to your “to read” list, and you’ll have it. The application has tons of other features – ability to write reviews, links to buy books, areas for groups, ability to hook up with your friends who are online and also use GoodReads so that you can suggest books to each other, and so much more.
What is your favorite list app, and why?
