The summer days are flitting away. I feel like I’m living one of those movie calendars – you know the ones that they put in old movies to show the passing of time – like the pages of a book, the calendar days go by. It’s always too fast.
I know that there are so many jokes about how parents can’t wait for summer to end and school to start, but I never have felt that way. Even with being home this summer with my kids, I love summer days. Come on, no morning rush, no busses to get to, no traffic, no HOMEWORK – what is not to love about the less stress summer?
A couple of years ago I made a “summer” playlist on my MP3 player. I filled it with songs about summer, hot weather, vacations, and just some good ol’ party songs. I added a couple contemporary songs to stay current. The first song is “School’s Out” by Alice Cooper. The kids love it. Gwen starts asking me to play it starting in May. We have a rule that we have to listen to the whole playlist from start to end the first time. With subsequent plays, I allow skipping around to favorite songs. One of Gwen’s favorites is “Ice Cream Man” by Van Halen. I often hear Tess singing along to “Holiday” by Madonna, and I smile.
I love that they love these songs. I love the thought that – many years from now – they will be grocery shopping and hear “Summer in the City” by Lovin’ Spoonful, and they will think of the wonderful summers of their childhood – driving around in the Jeep with the top down and the music blaring.
